ALGERIA — Nigeria’s U17 team, the two-time champions, began their Africa U17 Cup of Nations, AFCON, campaign on a high note on Sunday, April 30, 2023, clinching a 1-0 win over Zambia, earning them all three points in the crucial Group B opener at the Stade Mohamed Hamlaoui.
The decisive moment came 14 minutes from time when Favour Daniel, amidst a goalmouth scramble, powerfully drove the ball past the Zambian goalkeeper, securing the honours in an encounter that was, for the most part, evenly matched.
“Nigeria showcased their prowess on the field tonight, dominating for long stretches. However, we were hampered by ineffective short passes and missed shooting opportunities,” said Ademola Olajire, NFF Head of Communications, in his post-match statement. “We will continue to fine-tune our game as we progress in the tournament.”
Despite Nigeria’s domination, the Zambian squad managed to hold their own, their robust defense preventing a goal deluge against them. Both teams had their share of near misses, striking the woodwork in the opening half. Abubakar Abdullahi’s valiant efforts for Nigeria were thwarted twice, as Zambia’s goal-tender rose to the challenge.
The five-time world champions, Nigeria, looked set to secure a two-goal victory, but substitute Light Eke’s penalty kick two minutes into additional time was smoothly handled by the Zambian goalkeeper.
Defender Yahaya Lawali, who turned in an impressive performance for Nigeria, was named Man of the Match. “It’s an honor to receive this recognition, but the victory is a team achievement,” Lawali humbly stated after the match. “Our focus now is on the next game.”
Coached by Nduka Ugbade, the Nigerian team will face Morocco on Wednesday and South Africa in their final match of Group B on Saturday.
The stakes remain high as the top four teams from the 12-nation finals will earn the privilege to represent Africa at the 2023 FIFA U17 World Cup. Nigeria’s victorious start has set the stage for an exciting tournament ahead.
