MINNA, Nigeria — Tears flowed freely on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, as dignitaries from across Niger State and beyond gathered to pay their last respects to the late Navy Commander Joseph Haruna, a member of the Niger State House of Assembly representing the Munya Constituency.

Haruna, who chaired the standing committee on security and intelligence, passed away at the age of 61 after a brief illness.

The funeral service was held at the Airforce Protestant Church, 013 Response Base, in Minna. By 8:00 a.m., dignitaries had begun arriving at the Nigerian Airforce base in Maikunkele, a suburb of Minna.

The solemn service commenced at 11:00 a.m., led by Rev. Joseph C. Yakubu, who urged attendees to reflect on the legacy of service and sacrifice for humanity.

The late Commander Haruna, a retired Airforce officer, was remembered for his passion for the well-being of his Constituency and Niger State.

Niger State Deputy Governor Comrade Yakubu Garba, who led a government delegation, praised Haruna’s commitment to public service, particularly in matters of peace and security in Munya, a region troubled by banditry.

“He used his military background and experience to offer help in the area of insecurity to his people and the state in general. His immense contributions to the peace and development of his Constituency will surely be missed,” said Garba.

Despite political differences as a member of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Haruna was lauded for his support of the state’s current administration.

Garba emphasized that Haruna’s dedication transcended politics, reflecting a deep commitment to the “renewed hope” agenda of the government.

The Niger State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Rt. Hon. Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, was in full attendance.

Former members of the assembly also joined in mourning their colleague. In his tribute, Sarkindaji described Haruna as a “true Nigerian” whose contributions to the state’s legislative efforts would be remembered.

“We will miss late Honorable Joseph Haruna Duza, who offered himself to the service of the people of his Constituency and the state in general,” Sarkindaji said.

“He will be remembered for his robust and unbiased contributions to state matters on the floor of the house during plenary.”

As the ceremony drew to a close, the body of the late Commander Haruna was transported to his hometown, Chibani in Munya Local Government, for burial according to military traditions.

Security was tight as the state bid farewell to a man whose dedication to public service left an indelible mark on his Constituency and the state at large.

In his sermon, Rev. Yakubu reminded mourners of the inevitable end that awaits everyone, urging politicians to focus on leaving positive legacies.

“No matter how long you lived, the end will surely come… only your legacy on earth will speak for you when you’re gone,” he said.
