VENICE, Italy — The Oscar-winning actor Nicole Kidman has announced the death of her mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, at the age of 81.
Kidman shared the heartbreaking news in a statement read aloud by Babygirl director Halina Reijn at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday, September 7, 2024.
Kidman had flown into Venice to accept an award for Best Actress for her role in the film but left the festival early upon learning of her mother’s passing.
Reijn, reading on Kidman’s behalf, told the audience that Kidman had only just arrived when she received the devastating news.
“Shortly after that, my beautiful, brave mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, has just passed,” Kidman wrote. “I’m in shock and I have to go to my family, but this award is for her. She shaped me, she guided me, and she made me.”
“The collision of life and art is heartbreaking, and my heart is broken,” the statement continued. Reijn concluded with a simple message to Kidman, saying, “We love you all, Nicole.”
A Profound Influence on Kidman’s Life and Career
Janelle Ann Kidman, a beloved figure in her daughter’s life, had long been an influential force in the actress’s career.
Kidman has often spoken about her deep connection with her mother, noting the role Janelle played in shaping both her personal and professional journey.
In a 2023 interview with PEOPLE, Kidman shared how closely involved her mother had been in her life, including in her career and sense of style. “She is so involved in what I wear,” Kidman said.
The actress also opened up about the bond they shared in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, revealing how her mother’s encouragement and determination fueled her own ambitions.
“She’s given me the fire to pursue the career I have because I’ve always wanted to please her,” Kidman said in 2020. “But she also carved her own path and wanted her daughters to have the same opportunity to carve their own paths.”
Janelle Kidman, along with her late husband Antony Kidman, was instrumental in ensuring her daughters had the opportunities that she herself did not.
“Mum didn’t necessarily get the career that she wanted, but she was determined that her daughters would have opportunities that were equal,” Kidman told the Sydney Morning Herald. “That’s given me my life.”
A Mother’s Legacy
