ABUJA, Nigeria – The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, announced that it will commence a post-election review of the 2023 general election in July.
The announcement was made in a statement signed by Festus Okoye, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, and issued following INEC’s regular meeting on Thursday, June 22, 2023, in Abuja.
Mr. Okoye explained that the decision to conduct a post-election review is consistent with the Commission’s practice in the past and is aimed at assessing various aspects of electoral activities that took place before, during, and after the elections.
The review is expected to be comprehensive, involving INEC officials at national and state levels and other stakeholders.
The aim is to learn from the experience, evaluate the electoral processes, and determine areas for improvement in future elections.
According to the statement, the review will begin with a meeting of the Resident Electoral Commissioners, RECs, on July 4, 2023, and conclude with the Commission’s retreat on August 5, 2023.
This initiative demonstrates INEC’s commitment to continuously improving the electoral process in Nigeria and ensuring that elections are conducted in a free, fair, and credible manner.
