American philanthropist and business woman, Melinda Gates is currently trending on social media and for the right reasons too.
Being the wife to arguably the world’s richest man, Bill Gates and her status as a business magnate did not stop Melinda from carrying a 20 litres bucket of water on her head with the locals while visiting Malawi. She did not just fetch water and carry it on her head but she also helped in washing dishes in the house of the Malawian couple where she resided.
“During my stay with the Gawanini family in Malawi, I joined the women collecting drinking water. I carried 20 litres and it was tough. Meanwhile Chrissy (pictured in the middle) was carrying about 40 litres. Many women do this everyday”
Speaking about her dish-washing experience, she said: “Helping wash the dishes during my homestay in Malawi. Women spend much of the day cooking and then cleaning up. It’s a reminder that it’s a lot more time consuming to do dishes when you can’t just turn on a faucet”
Melinda was in Malawi on a safe-motherhood mission. This was not her first time to the East African nation.
Seeing her carry a bucket of water on her head will remind Malawians of a similar gesture by former President, Joyce Banda who also carried a bucket of water on her head to promote water supply, development and also motherhood
Way to go Melinda!
