Meghan Markle Sets the Record Straight on Coronation Absence Controversy

Must read

CALIFORNIA, USA – In a recent statement, Meghan Markle has denied allegations stemming from a report in the Daily Telegraph, calling them “false and frankly ridiculous.”

The report claimed that Meghan and Prince Charles exchanged letters discussing the so-called “royal racist” who allegedly made a comment questioning the likely color of her then-unborn children’s skin.

These letters were said to be a factor in Meghan’s decision not to attend the upcoming coronation.

The statement, released via the Twitter account of Meghan’s biographer Omid Scobie on Saturday, April 22, 2023 clarified the Duchess of Sussex’s perspective on the matter:

“The Duchess of Sussex is going about her life in the present, not thinking about correspondence from two years ago related to conversations from four years ago. Any suggestion otherwise is false and frankly ridiculous. We encourage tabloid media and various other royal correspondents to stop the exhausting circus that they alone are creating.”

According to the Telegraph, Meghan’s correspondence indicated she had never intended to specifically accuse the individual involved of being a racist but was raising concerns about unconscious bias. The report also suggested that both the King and the Duchess acknowledged that the individual’s remark was not made with malice.

In a separate interview for Prince Harry’s memoir, Spare, he denied that Meghan’s comments during their Oprah Winfrey interview amounted to allegations of racism, accusing the “British press” of misrepresenting them.

The London Times’ royal correspondent Valentine Low has since issued an apology for suggesting the Sussex camp had leaked the details of the letters to the Telegraph. The Sussexes and the palace have sent legal letters following the story’s publication.

The Telegraph report implied that Meghan’s absence from the coronation of King Charles was due to dissatisfaction with the palace’s responses to her complaints of bullying and neglect. However, Meghan’s representatives have stated she will be hosting Prince Archie’s fourth birthday instead.

The Daily Telegraph‘s story also claimed that Harry and Meghan felt they were treated “appallingly” following the queen’s death and that the Sussexes believed the family member who made the skin color comment did not act “with malice.”

The Sussex camp has previously vowed not to engage in anonymous briefings, and the legal letters sent by both parties are likely to deter further media speculation on the matter.
