A pregnant woman was dragged to her early grave after a crocodile grabbed and dragged her into a lake.
The incident which happened in Uganda left the woman’s 50-year-old husband, Mubarek Batambuze, desperate for revenge on the beast.
The tragedy struck when the deceased woman, Demeteriya Nabire stood by the edge of Uganda’s Lake Kyoga, alongside some other women from her village some four months ago.
Speaking to the BBC on Wednesday, February 4, 2015 the bereaved man explained just how devastated he was when he learnt of her grisly demise.
The husband who is a fisherman said, “The crocodile ate my wife entirely. Nothing was ever seen of her again – no clothes, no part of her body that I could identify. I just didn’t know what to do-a mother and her unborn child. It was the end of my world. I was completely lost.”
After he lost hope about getting a revenge on the crocodile, the 50-year-old fisherman got a tip-off that the beast that killed his wife and unborn child had returned to the village yet again.
He said, “Somebody called me and said, ‘Mubarak, I have news for you — the crocodile that took your wife is here — we are looking at it now.’”
The crocodile which was more massive than the fisherman thought reportedly weighed 1,300 pounds and was over four meters (around 12 feet) long according to Ugandan Wildlife Authority ranger Oswald Tymanya.
He employed the services of a blacksith to help him construct a spear that costed him $5 so he would attack and kill the beast.
After he obtained the spear, his friends discouraged him due to the size of the creature.
“Please don’t attack this beast, it’s so huge it may eat you. The spear is not enough — it won’t finish the job,” said his friends.
However, Batambuze who preferred to die in the process than to let the crocodile go scot free insisted and finally succeeded in killing it after an hour and a half tussle.
“I put the spear into the crocodile’s side, and while my friends were helping to throw stones at the beast’s back, it tried getting its mouth up to attack me again.”
“It turned violent, and then there was so much fear in the place. But I was so determined, and I wasn’t afraid of dying. I just wanted it dead, so I put the spear in its side and I pulled the rope. That got the crocodile into trouble.”
He returned to his house with the carcass of the beast and was branded a hero.
Bones believed to be those of the pregnant woman were allegedly found inside the dead crocodile’s stomach although an expert from Charles Darwin University in Australia, Adam Britton maintained that it’s “highly improbable” considering the long time lag.
Despite his victory in killing the murderous crocodile, the bereaved husband is still heartbroken at the loss which it caused him.
He said, “Within myself I’m a very depressed man because I lost a wife and an unborn child”
