A man wrongly convicted of kιlling the wife of a New Orleans police officer was freed from prison after 34 years.
Reginald Adams was convicted of mυrdering Cathy Ulfers in 1979, but prosecutors have since admitted misconduct by both the police and district attorney and apologized to Adams.
Adams admits to confessing to the crime but says police had given him drugs and alcohοl before beginning an intense interrogation.
‘I’m just ready to go. Trying to build me a life. After 34 years, I don’t even know how to use a cell phone,’ Reginald Adams told WWLTV following his release on Monday.
After the Innocence Project contacted New Orleans prosecutors and drew attention to evidence which wasn’t linked to Adams, prosecutors acknowledged that both they and police had been guilty of misconduct.
District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro dropped the mυrder charges on Monday and apologized personally to Adams.
“If he had been in possession of the supplemental report that was concealed from his attorneys, he would have likely been acquitted,” said Cannizzaro.
Assistant District Attorneys Ronald Bodenheimer and Harold Gilbert used only Adams’ confession to tie him to the crime.
Bodenheimer and Gilbert “were fully aware of the additional suspects as well as the recovery of the mυrder weapon and other physical evidence and that their handling of this case amounts to intentional prosecutorial misconduct,” said Cannizzaro.
