Narrating the incident during the session in court, Prosecutor Bridie Smurthwaite said, “She went inside and began to get changed.
“She went downstairs when she heard the door.
“He burst through the door and began punching and kicking her. She ran upstairs and he followed.
“‘He grabbed her by the hair. He began throwing her about, kicking and punching her.
“She ran outside in her pyjamas. The defendant followed and again began to punch and kick her.
“He picked up a spade from her garden and tried to hit her. He then grabbed her by the throat and threw her to the ground. “
The accused who hails from Porchester Square, Sunderland, admitted affray and having a bladed article.
Mr Recorder Jamie Hill QC sentenced him to 16 months behind bars and issued a restraining order banning any contact with Miss Dawson or entering her street.
While delivering his verdict, the judge said, “When you were told to leave Miss Dawson’s home it seems you didn’t accept that and in the incident that followed I have heard described how you were rampaging through that house.
“It is a matter of good fortune really she wasn’t seriously injured.”
