Tyrone Bowd’s scrotum is already down to his knees and it is still growing, putting the 24-year-old at risk of infections that could turn his body septic
The 24-year-old, who also has an inverted penis, is at risk of dangerous infections that make his his heart race, his temperature rocket and his body turn septic.
His scrotum will not stop growing and is already down to his knees, seriously affecting his quality of life.
Worried mum Tanya said: “Tyrone needs help to go to the toilet and he has a lot of difficulty walking. He broke his leg in a motorbike accident earlier this year and that’s because his scrotum was a hindrance on the bike.
“His scrotum is so big that he can’t ride a bike anymore and family and friends pitched in to get him a quad bike.”
Tyrone, who has a learning disorder, was diagnosed with scrotal lymphedema about 12 months ago. Now Tanya, who is also his full-time carer, is desperately battling to raise more than £55,000 to fly him from their home in Australia to the US for vital surgery. They have so far raised about £3,100.
Mum-of-four Tanya said: “As a mother the last 12 months have been emotional. I can’t sleep and I’m always doing research about how to help my son.
“Some days I get to the point where I think we won’t get the help we need but as a mother I can’t stop. I’m 100% committed to saving my son’s life.”
She said Tyrone rarely complained about the agony he was in and added: “He is always trying to make everyone he meets laugh, he loves fast cars, motor bikes, playing jokes, listening to music and spending time with people.”
Tyrone, of Willowbank, Queensland, has tried to get help from more than 100 medics. His mum said: “No one can help us in Australia. I had doctors discuss building a team to give surgery a go only to be told by a urologist that if I was to sign on the dotted line and allow anyone in Australia to operate I would be signing my son’s life away.”
Instead, she claimed Californian specialist Dr Joel Geldman would be able to save Tyrone. Tanya said: “I’ve had continuous correspondence with him. He has been monitoring Tyrone’s condition via medical reports CT scans, ultrasounds and photographs.”
The medic, from the University of California’s Center for Reconstructive Urology, previously removed a man’s 60kg scrotum, while preserving the patient’s penis and both testicles.
