Man Jailed For Stealing Inside Mosque In Oyo

NAN – An Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court, Ibadan, Oyo State, on Tuesday sentenced one Akeem Adeyemi, 31, to five months’ imprisonment for stealing inside a mosque during prayers to end the day’s Ramadan fast.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Adeyemi, whose address is unknown, had on Monday pleaded guilty to two counts of felony and stealing inside a place of worship.

The magistrate, Mrs. A.F. Richards, sentenced the convict to two months for committing felony and another three months for stealing.

Richards said that the two sentences were to run concurrently, starting from the day the convict was first arraigned before the court.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Corporal Oluseye Oyebanji, had told the court that Adeyemi, on June 26, 2015, stole N7,000 from one Jubril Awalu.

Oyebanji said Adeyemi entered the Bodija Housing Central Mosque, Ibadan with other worshipers, and managed to remove the money from Awalu’s pocket.

He said the offences were contrary to sections 390 (9) and 415 of the Criminal Code, Caps 38. Vol 11, Law of Oyo State, 2000.
