A 25-year-old man, Famous Ogbeide has died during a drinking competition of different hot drinks with three persons at a funeral ceremony in Benin City, capital of Edo state.
Two other contestants were also reportedly hospitalised after he competition at the burial service of one of their friend’s father, Nigerian Observer reports.
The incident happened at Okhuarobo Street, Off Saint Savour Road, in the aforementioned state.
Sources disclosed that one of the youths who was inside the canopy provided for friends and well-wishers of the bereaved children, initiated the drinking-competition.
It was gathered that as soon as the plan was hatched, the youths raised money, bought some bottles of hot drinks from a nearby store as they began to mix and consume the intoxicating contents.
The victim who allegedly won the first and second rounds of the competition had taken more than enough of the alcoholic beverage collapsed on the roadside and later died at the hospital.
He could not even live to enjoy the grand prize of N4, 000 which he worked for.
One of the contestants m pulled out of the contest immediately he gulped his forth glass which resulted in his coughing and vomiting.
The two others said to be battling to save their lives were rushed to a hospital when they lost coherence and became very weak to stand.
Police officials in the state have arrested the mourner, Emma Guobadia who arrived Nigeria from Malasia, a day to his father’s funeral.
Meanwhile, the bereaved mother of the deceased said her son told her that he was attending a burial of his friend’s father when she was later informed that he died.
She said that her son was an ‘alumaco’ apprentice and that his father died last December. Attempt to reach the survivors of the drinking-contest failed as no one volunteered information as to how they could be reached.
The police spokesperson in the state, DSP Joseph Edoigiawerie who confirmed the incident said that the case is currently being looked into at the homicide session of the police command.
