Major Reshuffle in Nigerian Navy, 56 Rear Admirals Reassigned

ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Navy announced on Thursday, June 29, 2023, that it has undertaken a significant reorganisation involving the reassignment of 56 Rear Admirals and a Commodore in a bid to enhance efficiency within the service.

Director of Naval Information, Commodore Ayo-Vaughan, revealed the restructuring in a statement.

Among those reassigned is Olusanya Bankole, who formerly served as the Director of Logistics, Defence Space Administration, and has been appointed as the Chief of Communications and Information Technology at the Naval Headquarters.

Alexander Bingel, formerly the Director of Combat Policy and Tactics, has been appointed as the Director of Logistics at the Defence Headquarters.

In addition, Ibrahim Dewu has been assigned as Chief of Defence, Civil-Military Cooperation, and Defence Headquarters, and Kennedy Ezete will take over as Chief of Administration.

Furthermore, Livingstone Izu has been appointed as the new Chief of Logistics.

The reshuffling also includes Musa Madugu, who has been appointed as Admiral Superintendent at the Naval Ordinance Depot; Daupreye Matthew, who will serve as Director of Training at Defence Headquarters; and Zakariya Muhammad, who will take on the role of Chief of Training and Operations.

The extensive reshuffle reflects the Navy’s commitment to rejuvenating its ranks and improving its operational effectiveness.

Other key assignments include Mohammed Abdullahi as the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, and Saheed Akinwande, previously the Commandant of Naval War College Nigeria, as Director of Operations, Naval Headquarters.

Commodore Ayo-Vaughan explained that this exercise aims to reinvigorate the Nigerian Navy for better service delivery in the security and maritime sectors.

He also noted that several officers have been reappointed to key positions, including Rear Adm. Emmanuel Nmoyem, who continues as Director of Human Rights Desks at Defence Headquarters.

The Nigerian Navy plays a crucial role in securing the country’s maritime borders and combating piracy and maritime crimes.

This reshuffling comes amid growing concerns about security challenges in the region.

Experts believe that redeployment these high-ranking officers is a step in the right direction as it could bring fresh perspectives and renewed energy in tackling the country’s various security challenges.

The Nigerian Navy continues to be essential in ensuring safety and security in the Gulf of Guinea, one of the most vital regions for global shipping routes.
