The World Health Organisation on Saturday, May 9, 2015 declared Liberia free of Ebola virus after 42 days without a new case. the nation lost about 4,700 people to the epidemic which broke out last year.
It is however not surprising to have the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf led government declare Monday, May 11, 2015 as a public holiday or to have the people, old and young, come out in their multitude to celebrate their triumph over the deadly Ebola virus.
Liberians were seen on the street with signs and posters with messages that read “We will always overcome” and “We are the winner”. Many others wave flags around, played drums and danced in celebration of victory. The Ebola outbreak in West Africa was first reported in March 2014 and quickly became the deadliest outbreak since the disease was discovered in 1976.
The latest outbreak has killed five times more people than all the other known outbreaks put together with Liberia loosing more people than any other country. The epidemic have not been overcome in Guinea and Sierra Leone.
