LOS ANGELES, USA – The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has announced that the late hip-hop legend Tupac Shakur will receive a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The honour, which was announced via a press release shared with The Trent on Wednesday, June 1, 2023, comes more than two decades after the influential rapper’s death.
The ceremony will take place on June 7, 2023 just over a week before what would have been Shakur’s 52nd birthday on June 16. Tupac will receive the Walk of Fame’s 2,758th star, a tribute to his lasting impact on the world of hip-hop and beyond.
L.A. radio legend Big Boy will host the ceremony. Guest speakers include director Allen Hughes and writer Jamal Joseph. Tupac’s sister, Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, will accept the honor on his behalf.
Born in New York, Shakur made his debut on the rap scene in 1991 with his album, “2Pacalypse Now.” Renowned for songs such as “Hit ’Em Up,” “California Love,” and “All Eyez on Me,” he was a key figure in the West Coast hip-hop scene. Shakur was tragically shot four times in Las Vegas and passed away on September 13, 1996, at the age of 25.
The posthumous Hollywood honour was initially slated for 2014, but a ceremony date was never confirmed, according to Walk of Fame producer Ana Martinez.
“Tupac has remained part of the zeitgeist for decades after his passing and will continue to be an important cultural figure for many years to come,” Martinez said.
Shakur, also known as 2Pac and Makaveli, will join the ranks of fellow rappers who have posthumously received stars on the Walk of Fame. The Chamber of Commerce recently honored rapper Nipsey Hussle with a star on what would have been his 37th birthday.
Earlier this year, a Hulu documentary series titled “Dear Mama,” directed by Allen Hughes, explored Shakur’s life and legacy, along with the activism of his mother, Afeni Shakur, a notable figure in the Black Panther Party.
The ceremony will be held at 6212 Hollywood Blvd. on June 7 at 10:30 a.m. and will be livestreamed on the Walk of Fame YouTube page.
