ENUGU, Nigeria – The Enugu State Government has entered into a landmark 35-year lease agreement with Landmark Africa Group to revitalise the 50-hectare Nike Lake Resort.
The collaboration aims to establish the resort as a premier tourism and leisure destination in Africa, attracting over three million visitors annually and boosting the state’s economy.
Announcing the partnership on Friday, January 17, 2025, Governor Peter Mbah underscored the project’s significance to Enugu’s development agenda.
“We see this project as a strategic opportunity to position Enugu as a regional hub for tourism and business,” Mbah said. He emphasised the state’s commitment to supporting the initiative with necessary infrastructure.
The agreement aligns with the governor’s broader vision of sustainable development and improved living standards for the people of Enugu.
“This partnership reflects our commitment to making Enugu a better place for both residents and investors,” Mbah added.

A Vision for Transformation
Paul Onwuanibe, Managing Director of Landmark Africa Group, detailed the company’s ambitions for the Nike Lake Resort.
“Our investment in Nike Lake Resort will not only elevate it to international standards but will also create significant employment opportunities for Enugu’s youth and drive economic growth,” he stated.
Landmark Africa’s redevelopment plans are expected to enhance the resort’s appeal as a world-class tourism destination while contributing to Enugu’s global visibility.
Environmental and Historical Context
The partnership follows a turbulent period for the site.
In 2022, the federal government ordered the demolition of the beach complex within the resort, citing violations of building codes and environmental protection regulations.
Coastal erosion and improper use of ecologically sensitive areas were also cited as factors behind the decision.
With this new lease, the project aims to overcome past challenges by prioritising sustainable development practices.
A Boost for Enugu’s Economy
The Nike Lake Resort transformation is projected to generate significant economic benefits for the state, including increased tourism revenue and job creation.
The partnership reflects Enugu’s broader strategy of leveraging public-private collaborations to spur growth and enhance its appeal as an investment destination.
“This marks a new chapter for the Nike Lake Resort and a promising future for Enugu’s tourism sector,” Onwuanibe concluded.
