Nigeria Is Not Absolutely Free From Ebola – Lagos Commissioner For Health

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris on Thursday, September 18, 2014 said Nigeria is absolutely not free from the Ebola Virus since the virus is still in neighbouring West African countries.

Idris said this in Ikeja, during the donation of some Ebola preventive materials by Neimeith Pharmaceutical Plc to the government which according to the Managing Director, Mr. Emmanuel Ekunno, was a contribution of their own quota towards fighting the virus the state.

He acknowledged the reaction of both the state and federal governments to nip the virus in the bud when it was brought into the country by Liberian, Patrick Sawyer.

He also stated that it has been more than a week and there has not been any fresh case. The commissioner said they have kept up with the people in the observation list, adding that the last person on the list was discharged yesterday.

According to him, in as much as there are still cases in neighbouring countries like Liberia, Sierria Leone and Guinea, there are still chances that the virus could still find its way into Nigeria.

He said that despite the fact that the Federal Government has been monitoring movement across borders that we should still be very careful in order to avoid re-contacting the virus.

Idris disclosed the plans of the government to ensure the availability of portable water and other sanitary equipment before resumption to eliminate the possibility of the disease in schools.
