A 10-year-old marriage between a carpenter, Olawale Akanji and his 33-year-old wife Afusat was on Friday, January 16, 2015 dissolved by a Customary Court sitting in Ikorodu Lagos state due to the woman’s alleged stealing habit, disobedience and adultery.
The aggrieved 34-year-old Akanji who lives at Akinwale Street,Igbogbo,Ikorodu, could no longer bear the unruly attitude of his wife who is a hairdresser and decided to take a legal approach to end the troubled union.
In the application filed at the court in October 2014, Akanji, a carpenter, said he could no longer tolerate his wife in the house any longer, Vanguard reports.
He stated that the last straw that broke the camel’s back which made him file for the divorce was that his wife was allegedly pregnant for another man.
He also alleged that his wife was in the habit of often stealing his money from his wardrobe, although his wife refuted the claims.
She said, “I don’t steal my husband’s money, even though he is very tight fisted.
“He gives us N300 feeding allowance daily and I will be the one to feed his old-aged mother and father that lived with us.
“I usually fetch water for sale, that’s where I get money to feed the family.
“He was always thinking that I am stealing his money or I have been engaging in extra- marital affairs, please help me save my marriage.’
The President of the Court, Mr Olu Adebiyi, in his ruling dissolved the marriage after observing that the couple could no longer cohabit peacefully.
Adebiyi ordered Akanji to register his pregnant wife in an ante natal clinic and pay accommodation fees to the her.
Additionally, the petitioner was charged with payment of the both school and medical allowances of their two children.
“The paternity of the pregnancy cannot be established now until a DNA test proves its ownership after delivery”.
