NAN – The Kwara Government on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 closed down an aviation school operating illegally and offering degree programmes to unsuspecting people.
The Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Saka Onimago, told newsmen that the school known as HIK School for Aviation, was not accredited by the Nigerian University Commission (NUC).
Onimago, who was represented by Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, the Director of Quality Assurance Bureau (QAB) in the ministry, said the school charged students N43, 000 per semester.
He also said the school did not have the approval of the Nigerian Education Research and Development Council (NERDC).
“The consultant prepared his own scheme of work formulated by the HIK centre, not having anything to do with NERDC,” he said.
According to him, students in the school have no science background as most of them had only qualifications in Islamic Religious Knowledge, Christian Religious Knowledge and Yoruba.
The commissioner said victims, who graduated from the school, claimed it was affiliated to Kwara State University, adding that this was false.
Mr Kolawole Idris, a consultant for the school and who identified himself as a professor was, however, unable to produce any evidence of his qualifications.
He told the joint task force from the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Science and Technology and Ministry of Education that he was a pensioner of the Nigerian Airways.
Idris said the institution was offering programmes leading to award of diploma, B.SC and B.ED in aviation.
He also told the officials that he got his training in aviation studies in Europe, adding that the school had 150 students.
“You are politicising this action by closing down my school,” he said.
