ILORIN, Nigeria – A 57-year-old woman, Mrs. Jamiu Sikirat, has tragically died after falling into a well while fetching water in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
The incident, which occurred around 6:42 pm on Monday, June 19, 2023, has sparked calls for caution in daily activities.
Sikirat, a resident of Ile-Agunko compound in the Adeta area of Ilorin West Local Government Area, slipped and fell into the well in an unfortunate accident.
Despite immediate response from the Kwara State Fire Service, she was recovered dead.
The Public Relations Office, PRO, of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, confirmed the incident.
He reported, “Our firefighters promptly responded to the distress call, and they were able to recover the deceased’s body from the well. The woman had gone to fetch water from the well when one of her legs slipped causing her to fall into the well.”
Adekunle expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident.
He shared the reaction of the director of the service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, who urged the general public to exercise caution in their daily activities and avoid sending young children to fetch water from wells.
The victim’s body was handed over to a family member, Alfa Abdulganiyu Akuko.
The event has underscored the inherent risks associated with fetching water from wells, prompting further discussions on safety and accessibility to water in the area.
