2 Priests Abducted in Agbarootor Ignites Prayer Movement for Their Safe Return

Must read

AGBAROOTOR, Nigeria — The serene calm of AgbaroOtor, a quiet locale near Warri in Delta State, was pierced on Saturday, April 29, 2023, when two Catholic priests, Reverend Father Chochos Kunav and his colleague Reverend Father Raphael Ogigba, were abducted.

The priests’ sudden disappearance has sent shockwaves through the religious community and sparked a fervent prayer movement for their safe return.

The two men were reportedly kidnapped on the AgbaroOtor road, seemingly en route to Ughelli or Warri, according to a statement issued by Very Reverend Father Okereke Kizito. “They both later went to see another priest around AgbaroOtor and on their way back they were abducted,” he detailed, his voice heavy with concern.

Father Chochos, who is currently serving in Ibadan, was visiting Father Raphael, a member of the Catholic Diocese of Warri. The purpose of their meeting, Father Kizito explained, was simply one of fellowship between two dedicated servants of the Church.

As news of the abduction spread, the Catholic community has rallied in unity, calling for prayers for the safe release of the priests. Father Kizito, speaking on behalf of the diocese, appealed for spiritual solidarity.

“We ask for intense prayers for quick and safe release,” he implored, adding, “May Jesus the high priest and the good shepherd take care of his priests and may our mother thrice admirable Queen and victress of Schoenstatt intercede for them.”

The incident has sent ripples of concern through the community and remains under investigation. A text message to the Delta state police spokesman, DSP Bright Edafe, seeking comment on the incident had not been responded to at press time.

The kidnappings are a stark reminder of the region’s ongoing security challenges.

As the investigation unfolds, the Catholic community, both local and global, remains hopeful. Amid the uncertainty, the focus is on the power of prayer and unity in the face of adversity.

“Today, we are reminded of the power of faith and the strength of our community,” Father Kizito said, his voice resolute. “We will not rest until our brothers are returned to us.”
