Kerry Washington celebrated impending motherhood with a baby shower with 50 of her nearest and dearest on Sunday.
The morning after scooping the Outstanding Actress In A Drama Series and Outstanding Drama Series awards for her hit show Scandal at the NAACP Image Awards, the actress was in the mood
to party with her friends and colleagues at the bash thrown by the show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes.
Co-star Katie Lowes and close friend Jane Fonda were among the invited guests at the female-only event held at the swanky Hancock Park property, with festivities kicking off at around 11am on the sunny winter’s day.
The first-time mom-to-be looked effortlessly chic as she dressed her blossoming baby bump in a knee-length denim shirtdress that was belted just below the bosom.
The long-sleeved number was rolled up for the warm weather conditions, while the 37-year-old exposed her toned bare legs, accentuating their length with a pair of gold heels.
The naturally striking star opted for very little make-up for the relaxed affair and kept her dark locks similarly styled in a no-fuss topknot with a thin black elastic headband keeping any loose strands from falling in her face.
Guests were seen arriving with arms full of presents wrapped in neutral tones of yellow and green, as well as pink and blue, containing everything from clothing to stuffed toys and gift baskets.
Valet parking attendants helped usher the attendees swiftly to the property, where they were checked in by security ahead of Kerry’s arrival a short time later with her mother, Valerie, by her side.
It was the perfect day for the shindig, which took place outside under a tent on the lawn surrounding Shonda’s swimming pool.
Jane Fonda shared a picture of the happy occasion on her blog and admitted she started crying as soon as she saw the mother-to-be.
She wrote: ‘Today I was at Kerry Washington’s baby shower. She’s 7 months pregnant and looking radiant.
‘I hadn’t seen Kerry since she was pregnant and as soon as I saw her with her gorgeous belly I starting crying. Then Kerry’s mother spoke, giving words of wisdom to Kerry and the rest of us about how to raise a baby to be a happy, fully realized, person.
‘I started crying again (and it wasn’t because I wanted to go back and do my own raising of my own kids all over again with more wisdom, though that did press in on me) . . . it was because her words moved me (sic).’
Jane also revealed one of the sweet mementos guests made for the baby.
She said: ‘It was a wonderful party with guests being asked to go into a photo booth and take 6 different poses that were then mounted on a black paper where we could write a message; signing a diaper (I wrote “I hope everything comes out alright!”), putting signed thumb prints onto a drawing of a tree – I had no idea there could be so many nice ways to commemorate the up-coming event and leave loving memories for mom and baby.’
Guests are said to have kept hydrated with glasses of lemonade as they chatted about the new chapter the actress is about to embark on, before toasting the mom-to-be with champagne.
When the festivities wrapped at around 3pm, the gracious guest of honour is reported to have farewelled her family and friends and then stayed back with her mom to catch up with Shonda and her extended family.
The newlywed, who married NFL player Nnamdi Asomugha on June 24 last year before announcing her pregnancy on October 30, doesn’t have much longer to wait to meet her bundle of joy, with approximately only two months left to go.
The child will be the first for both.
A happy occasion: The actress was said to be thankful to get to spend her special day surrounded by her nearest and dearest friends and family members
