Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano State and his deputy, the governor-elect, Abdullahi Ganduje are fighting over an alleged sum of 50 million naira which the governor presented as a parting gift to the governor-elect which the latter refused to accept.
According to TheCable news reports, tensions are beginning to arise between the predecessor and successor who have had a very long relationship with each other. The pair were governor and deputy from 1999 to 2003 before losing the election for a second term, Ganduje was Governor Kwankwaso’s right hand man when he was minister of defence under the Obasanjo adminstration. They returned again to power in Kano State in 2011 once again as governor and deputy.
With Governor Kwankwaso set to go to the senate come May 29 and Mr. Ganduje taking over the affairs of the state.
The report also said that the N50 million wasn’t the only gift the governor has given out with just 10 days to handover scheduled to hold on May 29, 2015 but it was the only gift which was rejected.
He had allegedly also offered cash gifts of N5 million each to his commissioners while special advisers received N2.5 million each. The governor’s personal gift to himself, as the report claims is N100 million.
The governor gave out houses and plots of lands in Kwankwasiyya city, Amana city and Bandirawo to his aides. Efforts made to reach the governor’s director of press by phone proved abortive but he replied through an sms saying; “I don’t know about it.”
While all this is going on, contractors in the state are complaining of bankruptcy and indigenes of the state on scholarship at different higher institutions of learning across the nation have not received any bursary payments for three consecutive years.
