Kano Revokes Licence of All Private Schools, Begins Re-certification Process

KANO, Nigeria — The Kano State Government has annulled the operational certificates of all private educational institutions operating within its jurisdiction.

The announcement came on Saturday, August 12, 2023, after a rigorous meeting with private school proprietors.

Baba Umar, the Special Adviser to the governor on Private and Voluntary Institutions, unveiled the government’s plan to issue new certificates after a thorough re-registration process.

All private institutions must reapply by promptly filling out the newly introduced forms.

“This move signifies our unyielding commitment to ensuring private schools align with the prescribed laws and regulations of our great state,” Umar remarked.

He emphasized the financial obligations of the school proprietors, noting, “It’s paramount for private school proprietors to honor their commitment of remitting the 10 per cent tax to the government. This dedication fuels advancements in our educational sector.”

Umar reassured all parties involved, emphasizing justice, fairness, and the paramount importance of maintaining operational standards, which includes the proper learning environment, curriculum, facilities, and academic schedules.

Addressing the concerns of many, Umar expressed, “We prioritize the interests of parents and their children. Their future is our mission.”

Alhaji Muhammad Adamu, Chairman of the National Association of Private Schools Owners, Kano State Chapter, lauded the government’s intervention.

“This is a laudable stride toward uplifting our local education,” Adamu said, urging his fellow proprietors to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the government, embracing the reforms designed for the betterment of all stakeholders.

A standout moment in the meeting was unveiling a cutting-edge software aimed at an exhaustive data collection of private and voluntary institutions throughout Kano.

New registration forms were also rolled out, ushering in an enhanced and meticulous registration process.

The reforms reflect Kano State’s renewed dedication to educational excellence, and many hope this will set a new benchmark for other regions in Nigeria.
