KANO, Nigeria — The Kano State Hisbah Board has earmarked over N800 million to facilitate the wedding of 1,800 couples under its mass wedding scheme.
The initiative aims to assist couples who have postponed their weddings due to financial constraints, thus promoting societal harmony and reducing vices.
Aminu Daurawa, the Commander-General of the Hisbah Board, confirmed the developments on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, while inspecting some of the procured items for the forthcoming weddings.
The items include clothing materials, foodstuff, furniture, and other necessities.
“Each bride will receive a set of bed, mattress and pillows, alongside N20,000 to kick-start a business venture. Several philanthropists have also shown interest in the initiative, committing to contribute to the success of these weddings,” Daurawa mentioned.
He emphasized the profound impact this gesture will have in reducing societal challenges, stating, “Such initiatives will drastically reduce postponed marriages due to the inability of parents to sponsor them. Consequently, it will help curtail societal vices and combat poverty.”
While the date of the mass wedding is yet to be announced, the board has set criteria for selecting beneficiaries.
Daurawa noted that any couples who seek divorce without substantial reasons after benefiting from the scheme would be obligated to reimburse the government.
The mass wedding initiative by the Kano State Hisbah Board is not new in the region.
Such programs have been implemented in the past, aiming to provide financial relief to couples and foster community cohesion.
With such generous provisions in place, residents and individuals motivated by the initiative’s objectives are encouraged to contribute and assist, ensuring the successful realization of this commendable endeavor.
