KANO, Nigeria – Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has officially reinstated Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano, praising his leadership and dedication to the well-being of his people.
The reinstatement was celebrated on Tuesday, Aprl 1, 2025, when the Emir and his entourage paid a traditional Hauwa Nassarawa homage at the Government House.
Governor Yusuf emphasized that Sanusi was reinstated due to his exemplary leadership qualities and vast knowledge, particularly his understanding of both Islamic rites and modern-day issues.
The governor described the Emir as someone who has led the people of Kano with great wisdom and devotion, distinguishing himself from many other leaders through his commitment to social issues and his deep connection with his community.
“Since he returned, he has been leading us in prayers, unlike many Emirs. When we look at formal education, he has all it takes to be everywhere. An emir who loves his people,” Governor Yusuf remarked during the meeting.
The governor also credited Sanusi with uniting the emirate council and various Islamic sects in Kano, as well as taking a strong stance against social vices in the state.
Furthermore, Yusuf reiterated his administration’s commitment to transforming Kano into a mega city, with efforts in urban development yielding positive results.
He assured that similar attention is being given to local government administration to ensure that the dividends of democracy reach grassroots communities across the state.
In response, Emir Sanusi II expressed his gratitude to the Kano State government and the State House of Assembly for reinstating him to the throne.
He praised the administration’s strides in human development, urging local government chairmen to intensify efforts toward improving living conditions in their respective areas.
As part of the traditional rituals, Emir Sanusi returned to the 1903 Hauwa Nassarawa homage, a respected cultural heritage in the region.
However, to avoid security breaches, the former Central Bank Governor opted for a vehicle convoy instead of the traditional horse-ride procession, in compliance with the Sallah Durbar prohibition.
He also took alternate routes to the Government House to avoid any potential clashes of interest during the visit.
