KANO, Nigeria – The Kano State House of Assembly has dismissed as “concocted fake news” the recent reports suggesting an intended amendment of the State Emirate Council Law aimed at reinstating the dethroned Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II.
The Assembly also refuted allegations of plans to dethrone the five newly appointed Emirs of Gaya, Bichi, Rano, and Karaye to pave way for the deposed Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II to regain control as the Emir of Kano.
The internet was abuzz with stories on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, claiming that the Assembly was set to discuss the issue of the emirates, with the Kano Emirates Amendment Bill 2023 slated to be presented by the Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini, a representative of the Dala constituency, on Thursday, June 15, 2023.
The reports suggested an impending approval of the amendment that would subsequently permit the removal of the current emirs and the restoration of Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano, with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s consent.
However, during a press briefing on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, following a House plenary session, Hussaini debunked the story as fabricated news.
The Majority Leader stated that there were no discussions or plans to present such an amendment.
“It’s funny as I read the fake news also and was asked by many people if I were aware of such a plan,” Hussaini disclosed.
He clarified that after the House had approved the governor’s request for the appointment of 20 Special Advisers, it adjourned its sitting until Monday, June 19, 2023.
Hussaini ended by attributing the spread of such rumours to individuals seeking to disrupt the state’s peace.
