ABUJA, Nigeria – The National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, has assured Dr George Moghalu, a former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), that the party will provide a level playing field for all aspirants vying for its ticket ahead of the November governorship election in Anambra State.
Abure made the pledge on Friday, March 21, 2025, when Moghalu submitted his completed expression of interest and nomination forms at the party’s secretariat in Abuja.
Abure emphasised that he had no anointed candidate and no personal interest in the outcome of the primary election scheduled for April 5.
He vowed that the process would be free, fair, and credible, with party members determining the flagbearer.
“I want you to take it to the bank that it is the people of Anambra and, more precisely, LP members that will determine who flies the party ticket,” Abure said.
“I want to appeal to you to go back to Anambra to do the needful by endearing yourself to the people, especially members of the party responsible for electing the candidate.”
The LP chairman reiterated his commitment to transparency, stating, “I want to say without any equivocation that there will not be godfatherism, and we have no anointed aspirant. The process will not be skewed towards an aspirant, and I assure you again that the process will be free, fair, and credible.”
Abure praised Moghalu’s credentials and expressed confidence in his ability to represent the party effectively.
“When we find men of goodwill, we open our arms to receive them. Little wonder we open all our arms to receive you when you come to join the LP. We believe, looking at your trajectory, that you are one of those credible individuals we feel, if given the ticket, will do good to the people of Anambra,” he added.
In his response, Moghalu thanked the party’s leadership for the opportunity and pledged not to disappoint if given the ticket.
He expressed his determination to win the governorship election and defeat the incumbent Governor, Charles Soludo, in November.
“Mr Chairman, I assure you that I will not let you down. I am going into this race, the governorship of our State, with the determination to win the election, and we shall win by the grace of God,” Moghalu said.
“I acknowledge with all sincerity that power belongs to God, and He gives it to whom He pleases. What we have done is to make ourselves available and for God to make the decision. Allowing me to fly the flag of our party provides us with the opportunity to have a State we can call our own.”
