Famous Giobaro, a journalist with Bayelsa Radio Corporation, Glory FM 97.1 Yenagoa, popularly known as the ‘Famous Man’ on Radio has been murdered in his home in the state’s capital.
The shocking crime was perpetrated by gunmen who stormed Giobaro’s apartment on INEC Road, Kpasia in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital.
According to reports, the suspected armed robbers stormed his apartment at about 5 a.m on Sunday, April 16, 2017, where they met stiff resistance from the late journalist who barricaded the door as they tried to forcefully gain entrance into his house.
The gunmen later shot through the door which hit him in the stomach .
The gunmen still went ahead with their operation after gaining entry open his house and shot him several times before they left the area.
Asinim Butswat, the spokesperson of Bayelsa State Police Command, confirmed the incident to journalists, but said he was still be updated with “the details”.
The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Bayelsa State Council have received the news with shock while calling on the Nigerian police to investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators of this dastardly act to book.
Until his death, Famous Giobaro was a desk editor in the Bayelsa State owned radio station.
In February 2017, John Idumange, the general manager of Bayelsa ‘Glory FM’ station admitted to the News Agency of Nigeria that he “flogged four union leaders of the station in self-defence” after the workers went on a strike to protest poor work conditions.
Giobaro is one in a long list of journalists who have been killed around the world. Gunmen invaded a radio station and murdered two journalists while they were on Facebook live in Dominican Republic.
