JERUSALEM, Israel — The Israel Defense Forces, IDF, announced on Thursday, October 17, 2024, that three Hamas militants were killed during an ongoing operation in the Gaza Strip.
Among those killed, there is a possibility that Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas in Gaza, was one of the deceased, according to Israeli officials.
The IDF is currently investigating the identities of the militants and said it could not yet confirm if Sinwar was among the dead.
“At this stage, the identity of the terrorists cannot be confirmed,” the military said in a statement.
The body believed to be Sinwar’s has been transferred to Israel for DNA testing, an Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told reporters.
The operation occurred in a building where Israeli forces targeted Hamas members believed to be operating.
“There were no signs that hostages were present in the building where the militants were killed,” the IDF statement added, signalling that the primary focus was on high-value Hamas figures.
Yahya Sinwar, one of the most prominent leaders of Hamas, has been a key figure in orchestrating the group’s activities in Gaza.
If confirmed, Sinwar’s death would be one of the most significant blows to the organization since the killing of Mohammed Deif, the military leader of Hamas, and Ismail Haniyeh, its former political leader, earlier this summer.
