ENUGU, Nigeria – The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has openly denounced any associations with Simon Ekpa, a Finland-based Biafra advocate.
The separatist group has accused Ekpa of leveraging the Eastern Security Network, ESN, to commit fraud.
In a press statement on Thursday, August 10, 2023, Emma Powerful, the spokesperson for IPOB, emphasized that Ekpa is neither a registered member of IPOB nor affiliated with ESN.
The group further warned media houses against misrepresenting this fact in their reports.
“Describing Simon Ekpa as a factional leader of IPOB is grossly misleading. Those who do so are either misguided, ill-informed or dancing to the tune of DSS, which we believe is funding Ekpa with an agenda to cause chaos in the South East,” Powerful stated.
Powerful further noted that Ekpa’s questionable activities, especially fraudulent fundraising schemes under the guise of ESN, have raised significant concerns.
While Ekpa has been seen referencing his “Government in Exile” group in many of his online videos, he is in no way connected to IPOB or its security outfit, ESN.
The IPOB spokesperson also highlighted their concerns regarding the attempts by organizations such as the DSS to infiltrate and destabilize IPOB.
He reiterated that the group remains united and vehemently denies any links with entities that aim to criminalize the socio-political landscape in the South East.

This revelation came as a response to threats from certain quarters of taking legal action against him due to his activities in the Southeast.
Further in the statement, Ekpa, who holds the position of Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government In Exile, narrated how Kanu had instructed him to persist in the cause, should any harm befall him.
He urged potential litigants to source their legal counsel from Finland and not Sweden while emphasizing his non-residential status in Sweden.
Additionally, he stressed that the lawyer should be cognizant of the circumstances under which he committed to the Biafra cause, particularly the solemn vow to carry forward the struggle in any adverse scenario involving Kanu.
Ekpa clarified that during the administration of the oath, neither Kanu’s alleged illegitimate son, Kanunta, nor any other siblings or expelled members of the DOS were present.
The commitment and fervor underpinning the statement imply Ekpa’s unwavering dedication to the Biafra cause.
He asserted his right to use Kanu’s name and likeness per their understanding until the latter’s release.
