The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Monday, November 28, 2016 published the final result of the Ondo governorship elections held on Saturday.
The state has a total of 1,647,973 registered voters, and 584,997 were accredited for the election while a total of 580,887 votes were cast. A total of 551,272 votes were valid and 29,615 votes were rejected across the 18 LGA in the state.
Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC was declared the winner of the poll by the returning officer, Abdul Ambali, a university professor with a total of 224,842 votes to defeat 27 other candidates.
Akeredolu, a senior advocate of Nigeria, was followed by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate, Eyitayo Jegede, who polled a total of 150,380 votes while Olusola Oke of the Alliance for Democracy, AD, in third place scored a total of 126,889 votes.
The election was marred by widespread vote buying at polling units by agents of the ruling party, the APC.
The People’s Democratic Party has rejected the result of the elections accusing INEC of colluding with the APC-led government to rig the poll. The party, which indicated that it was heading to the courts to challenge the conduct of the poll, said that the entire exercise was carried out in violation of the Electoral Act.
