Imo: Unknown Gunmen Murder INEC Staff Emmnauel Igwe, Abduct Wife

OWERRI, Nigeria – A staff member of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Emmanuel Igwe, has been reportedly murdered by unknown gunmen in Imo State.

The tragic incident took place on Sunday, June 18, 2023, along the Ivo Local Government Area axis of the state.

The late Emmanuel Igwe, who served as an assistant electoral officer in Afikpo North LGA, was ambushed by the assailants while returning from a trip to Abia State.

According to reports, the armed men also kidnapped the deceased’s wife, whose whereabouts remain unknown.

The incident was confirmed by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Onome Onovwakpoyeya.

“We have begun a manhunt for the assailants. We are hopeful that they will be apprehended. The victim was shot through the windscreen of his car,” Onovwakpoyeya stated on Monday, June 19, 2023.

This murder adds to the rising cases of insecurity in the region, presenting another significant challenge for law enforcement agencies as they work to ensure the safety of citizens.

As of the time of this report, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
