Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Orlu Zone of Imo State have rejected any form of zoning for the governorship in 2015.
The leaders also declared ‘null and void’ a purported charter of equity, which a few people claimed had before now defined a zoning arrangement for the state.
Comprising all prominent PDP chieftains and stakeholders from Orlu Zone, the leaders made the declaration last Saturday after a meeting in Orlu.
The meeting, convened by Orlu Zone PDP executive, had in attendance, Senator Hope Uzodinmma, representing Imo West (Orlu Zone) Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Jerry Alagbaoso, representing Orlu, Oru East and Orsu Federal Consituency, Jones Onyeriri, representing Isu, Nwangele, Nkwere and Njaba Federal Constituency and Gerald Irona, representing Oru West, Oguta and Ohaji/Egbema Federal Constituency as well as PDP House of Assembly members from the zone.
Other PDP chieftains from Orlu Zone at the meeting were Chief Achike Udenwa, former governor of Imo State, Chief Douglas Acholonu, former deputy governor of Imo State, Chief Tony Ezenna, a business mogul and chairman Orange Drugs Ltd, the state Chairman of the party, Chief Nnamdi Anyaehie, former state chairman of the party and Chairman National Population Commission (NPC), Eze Duruiheoma, former secretary to Imo State Government, Nze I.M.O. Umunah, former national and state Assembly members and a host of others.
The leaders averred in their resolution that governorship in the state had never been zoned by the PDP even when the party was in power and wondered how zoning should suddenly become an issue for 2015 when the PDP was contesting the governorship election as an opposition party. They insisted that the choice of PDP candidate for the governorship race next year must be ‘merit and capacity-driven’.
