Bala N’Allah, the senate deputy leader, said on Tuesday, July 26, 2016, that he was the only Kebbi state lawmaker in the 5th national assembly who turned down a N50 million bribe from Olusegun Obasanjo in defiance of the ex-president’s bid to get a third term.
He debunked Obasanjo’s blanket accusation of lawmakers as “rogues” on Monday, July, 25, 2016, vowing that if the former president can prove any record of corruption against him, he will vacate his seat as senator.
“For the records, I was the only member from Kebbi state who did not find it worthy at that time of collecting the sum of N50 million as an inducement to subvert the constitution and provide a constitutional framework for the third term ambition of President Obasanjo,” said Na’Allah in a statement.
On Monday, Obasanjo visited the presidential villa where he told journalists that the ongoing controversy over budget padding involving Nigerian lawmakers is proof that they are “armed robbers and rogues”.
In response, Na’Allah said that Obasanjo’s statement was “reckless and terrifying.”
“The implications of the statement is to say that the entire over 170 million Nigerians have not elected a single person with integrity among the 469 members of the national assembly. This is definitely rhapsodic and does not conform to common sense and reason,” he added.
