A hunter, Sikiru Osideko, has gunned down his very good friend, Segun Okusi, after he mistook him for an animal during his usual hunt at Isara, in the Remo North Local Government Area of Ogun State.
Osideko, was arrested on Thursday, July 30, 2015 by officials of the state police command for the costly mistake which he insisted was not intentional.
The deceased who was also a hunter was said to have bid goodbye with his friend Osikedo around 4pm of the fateful day but about 30 minutes later, Osideko reportedly noticed a movement in the bush and shot in the direction with his dane gun.
According to Punch, Okusi was said to have let out a sharp cry, which made the suspect to realise that he had shot at his friend and rushed to the place and tried to resuscitate his friend, but to no avail as he died on the spot.
An official of the Isara Police Division, whose identity was not disclosed, said that the operatives visited the bush to take Okusi’s corpse to a mortuary.
He said, “Policemen from the Isara division visited the bush and found Okusi in a pool of blood. They took photographs and deposited the corpse in a mortuary.
“They arrested the suspect and seized the dane gun. The man has been taken to the state command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.
“Such strange thing has not happened among hunters in this area. It was in the broad daylight.
“It was another hunter, one John Oseni, who raised the alarm and reported the matter to the police.”
The case had been transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation, where Osideko was reportedly assisting the police with investigations into the death of his friend.
Confirming the incident, the State Police spokesperson, DSP Muyiwa Adejobi, said the police had launched an ongoing investigation into the matter.
He said, “That incident happened in a bush near Isara.
“The two men went out for hunting, and the suspect mistakenly fired his colleague. The victim died on the spot.
“The suspect is with us, and investigations are ongoing into the matter.”
