The history of this genre is as old as the advent of Christianity in Nigeria, dating back to the mid-19th century when missionaries used literature as a tool for evangelism.
Today, Nigerian Christian literature has evolved to include a variety of genres, such as fiction, devotionals, theology, poetry, and children’s literature, each serving to inspire and nurture faith within the Christian community.
In the early days, Christian literature in Nigeria was primarily produced by missionaries who translated the Bible into indigenous languages. Figures like Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther were instrumental in translating the Bible into Yoruba, Igbo, and other native languages, thus laying the foundation for a rich tradition of Christian writing. These early translations not only spread the gospel but also helped preserve and standardize local languages.
As Christianity grew, so did the need for locally relevant Christian literature. By the mid-20th century, Nigerian Christian writers began to emerge, producing works that addressed the unique challenges and spiritual needs of Nigerians.
Nigeria is home to many renowned pastors who are also prolific Christian writers, contributing significantly to faith-based literature.
Some of the most popular include Pastor Enoch Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Bishop David Oyedepo of Living Faith Church, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome of Christ Embassy, Pastor Tunde Bakare of Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Sam Adeyemi of Daystar Christian Centre, Bishop Mike Okonkwo of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), and Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo of Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC). Others include Pastor Paul Adefarasin of House on the Rock, Pastor W.F. Kumuyi of Deeper Life Bible Church, Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo of Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA), Pastor David Ibiyeomie of Salvation Ministries, Pastor Jerry Eze of Streams of Joy International, Apostle Johnson Suleman of Omega Fire Ministries, Pastor Poju Oyemade of Covenant Christian Centre, and Pastor D.K. Olukoya of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM). These leaders have authored numerous books and materials on Christian living, faith, leadership, and spiritual growth.
The real momentum for Christian literature in Nigeria, however, came with the founding of the Association of Nigerian Christian Authors and Publishers (ANCAPS) in 2010. Founded by Wole Adedoyin, a biblical literature expert and Christian writer, ANCAPS has played a pivotal role in promoting and developing Christian literature in the country. Through various initiatives, seminars, conferences, symposia, and workshops, the association has created a platform for Christian writers to hone their craft and share their works with a wider audience.
ANCAPS is also the driving force behind several prestigious literary awards, including the Nigerian Christian Literature Award, the Nigerian Christian Book of the Year Award, and the Nigerian Christian Teen Writers Award. These awards have brought recognition to numerous talented Christian writers, such as Mbadugha Chigozie Anuli, Shade Bright and others, who have made significant contributions to the genre. Through these awards, ANCAPS not only recognizes excellence in Christian writing but also encourages new writers to explore Christian themes in their works.
In addition to its awards programs, ANCAPS has launched several other initiatives aimed at promoting Christian literature in Nigeria. One of these is the Interview Series, where established Christian authors share their experiences and insights, offering guidance to upcoming writers. Another notable initiative is the Books of the Week Project, which highlights Christian books, providing them with greater visibility in the literary market.
A recent addition to Nigeria’s Christian literary landscape is the Centre for Christian Literature Research and Documentation, which was registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission last month. This center aims to serve as a hub for research on Christian literature in Nigeria and beyond, providing a repository of Christian writings and offering resources for writers, scholars, and readers alike. It is expected to play a crucial role in preserving and promoting Nigeria’s Christian literary heritage.
The significance of the spiritual genre in Nigeria cannot be overstated. It provides a means for Christians to engage with their faith, grapple with theological questions, and find spiritual nourishment.
For many, reading Christian literature is an essential part of their spiritual journey, helping them to grow in their faith and navigate the challenges of life in a rapidly changing world.
Moreover, Christian literature in Nigeria serves as a form of evangelism. Through novels, poetry, devotionals, and children’s books, Christian writers are able to communicate the message of Christ in a way that resonates with Nigerian readers. These works often address real-life issues such as poverty, corruption, family challenges, and spiritual warfare, providing readers with biblical perspectives on how to handle these problems.
ANCAPS has also been instrumental in creating blueprints for Christian authors in the country. These blueprints offer guidelines on how to write and publish Christian literature that adheres to biblical principles while being accessible and relevant to modern readers. The association provides training for writers on how to improve their writing skills, navigate the publishing process, and market their books effectively.
The rise of digital technology has also opened new avenues for Christian literature in Nigeria. ANCAPS has embraced this development by organizing webinars for Christian writers, enabling them to connect with audiences across the globe. These webinars offer writers the opportunity to learn from industry experts and engage with readers in real time, further expanding the reach of Nigerian Christian literature.
Despite these achievements, challenges remain. The Nigerian publishing industry, including the Christian literature sector, faces significant hurdles such as limited access to funding, lack of proper distribution channels, and competition from secular literature. However, with the continued efforts of ANCAPS and other stakeholders, there is hope that Christian literature will continue to thrive and reach new heights.
Another significant development is the growing interest in Christian literature among the youth. With the establishment of awards like the Nigerian Christian Teen Writers Award, young writers are being encouraged to explore Christian themes in their writing. This has resulted in a new generation of Christian writers who are using literature to express their faith and influence their peers.
Looking to the future, the prospects for the genre in Nigeria appear bright. With the continued support of organizations like ANCAPS and the development of institutions like the Centre for Christian Literature Research and Documentation, Nigerian Christian writers will have more resources and platforms to share their works.
