House of Representatives Advances Proposals for Four New Nigerian States

ABUJA, Nigeria – The House of Representatives has passed four bills seeking the creation of additional states across Nigeria, as part of the ongoing Constitution amendment exercise by the 10th Assembly.

The bills, which were presented for second reading on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, also included 38 other bills aimed at altering various provisions of the 1999 Constitution.

The four proposed bills for the creation of new states were:

  1. A Bill for the Creation of Oke-Ogun, Ijebu, and Ife-Ijesa States, sponsored by Rep. Oluwole Oke. The bill seeks to alter the Constitution by amending Part 1 of the First Schedule to create three new states.

  2. A Bill for the Creation of Tiga State from the present Kano State, with the headquarters in Rano, sponsored by Rep. Ghali Mustapha Tijani.

  3. A Bill for the Creation of Orlu State in the South Eastern region, sponsored by Rep. Ikweagwuonu Ugochinyere.

  4. A Bill for the Creation of Etiti State, carved from the existing five states in the South East region, with the capital at Okigwe, sponsored by Rep. George Ibezimako Ozodinobi.

Following the reading of the long titles of the bills, the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the plenary, put the bills to a voice vote.

All four bills passed and were referred to the House Committee on Constitution Review for further examination.

Additionally, the House passed 39 other Constitution alteration bills on the same day, which were also referred to the Committee.
