The U.S. State Department did not designate Boko Haram a foreign terrorist organization until November of last year. The terror group is responsible for the recent kidnapping of 300 schoolgirls in Nigeria.
“The Clinton State Department resisted calls from the Justice Department, the CIA, the FBI, some of its own officials, some of the White House officials, at the behest, mostly, of the Nigerian government,” says The Daily Beast’s Josh Rogin, who reported a detailed piece on the back and forth in the State Department under then-Secretary Hillary Clinton.
“This will be a huge issue in the narrative of (Clinton’s) tenure in the State Department, if she decides to run for president in 2016, because it speaks both to her record on international terrorism, and her claim that she’s at the forefront of protecting women and girls in conflict,” says Rogin.
In his report, Rogin quotes an unnamed former U.S. official who says: “The one thing she could have done, the one tool she had at her disposal, she didn’t use. And nobody can say she wasn’t urged to do it. It’s gross hypocrisy.”
