High Tensions: APC National Chairman Adamu Bows Out as Party Conflict Intensifies

Must read

ABUJA, Nigeria – Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, tendered his resignation on Sunday, July 16, 2023, according to credible sources within the party.

Adamu, who became the National Chairman during the party’s national convention held in March 2022, reportedly sent his resignation letter to the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

This move was made in anticipation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s return from the African Union, AU, meeting in Kenya.

Sources indicate that Adamu, the former governor of Nasarawa State, submitted the resignation letter to the Chief of Staff of the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, around 4pm on Sunday,  July 16, 2023.

“He has resigned. The resignation letter signed by him has been sent to the villa. The letter was addressed to President Tinubu. But since the president is away in Kenya for the AU meeting, the letter was sent to his chief of staff,” a source explained.

Another source close to Adamu added that the resignation was due to an impending attempt to embarrass the national chairman during upcoming party meetings.

However, reports that President Tinubu asked Adamu to step down were firmly denied.

Adamu’s resignation comes on the eve of the National Caucus and National Executive Committee, NEC, meetings of the APC, scheduled for Monday, July 1, 2023, and Wednesday, July 19, 2023.

The meetings are designed to address critical issues and internal crisis within the National Working Committee, NWC.

A founding member of the APC stated that Adamu resigned to avoid potential humiliation during the meetings, as influential individuals around the president had allegedly mobilized against him.

When contacted, Adamu refused to comment on the matter, stating, “I won’t talk about the issue because the president is away.”

It should be noted that Adamu has faced considerable controversy in recent times.

Before the presidential primaries of the APC, he declared former Senate President Ahmad Lawan as the party’s consensus candidate.

This move sparked uproar within the party, leading to a pushback from northern governors who advocated for the presidency to be zoned to the South.

Adamu’s resignation marks yet another chapter of turmoil for the APC, as the party continues to grapple with internal disputes and a shifting political landscape.

The implications of this development on the APC’s future political strategies remain to be seen.
