ABUJA, Nigeria — The 9th Assembly of the House of Representatives was officially dissolved amid high emotions and nostalgic farewells led by Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila on Wednesday, June 7, 2023.
The valedictory session was initiated by Rep. Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, the Majority Leader of the House, with a motion seconded by Rep. Ndudi Elumelu, the Minority Leader.
In an emotional address, Speaker Gbajabiamila thanked his colleagues for their combined efforts in nation-building and the enriching impact they have had on his life.
“We have come, we have seen and while we are yet to conquer, my enthusiasm to serve remained undiminished,” Gbajabiamila said. He also expressed gratitude to his constituency and his colleagues for the privilege to serve.
Gbajabiamila highlighted the transformative initiatives spearheaded by the 9th House, including responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Police Reform Bill, Electoral Acts Amendment Bill, and Constitutional Review.
The Speaker pointed out the discipline introduced to the Appropriation Act that now runs from January to December of every year.
Members expressed heartfelt sentiments about their time in the House. Rep. Julius Ihovhre (APC-Edo) and Rep. Luke Onofiong (PDP-Akwa-Ibom) commended Gbajabiamila for his leadership and ability to manage a diverse group.
Rep. Yusuf Gadgi (APC-Plateau) called for a message of forgiveness among members, acknowledging that they might have offended each other during their tenure.
The first woman to represent her constituency, Rep. Aisha Duku (APC-Borno), expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve.
“I have been able to enlighten people and bring out the women to vote, which hitherto they had not,” Duku stated.
Present at the valedictory session were former speakers and House Leaders, including Gali Na’abba, Patricia Etteh, Mulikat Akande, and former clerks of the National Assembly.
As Nigeria bids farewell to the 9th assembly, the stage is set for the 10th House of Representatives to commence its tenure.
