OWERRINTA, Nigeria – Gunmen launched an armed assault on the Police Rapid Response Squad (RRS) facility in Owerrinta, Abia State, in the early hours of Monday, November 4, 2024.
The attackers, arriving in three Hilux vehicles, attempted to free detainees and opened fire on the facility, resulting in the death of a female detainee.
According to the state Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, the assailants also used dynamite to breach the facility’s roof during the raid.
“Our personnel repelled the attack,” Isa confirmed, adding, “In their attempt to release detainees, the attackers opened fire, leading to the tragic death of a female suspect.”
Unconfirmed reports indicate the deceased was being held in connection with a child trafficking investigation.
Following the incident, police pursued the suspects using “technical methods,” which led to the arrest of one individual.
Commissioner Isa noted that the detainee is currently being interrogated to identify other accomplices involved in the attack.
“We are making progress,” he stated, reassuring the public of ongoing efforts to secure the region.
The attack on the Owerrinta RRS facility underscores growing security challenges in the area, as authorities work to strengthen protective measures and prevent future incidents.
