A group of assailants have on Friday, October 10, 2014 at about 10pm murdered the Executive Secretary of Bayelsa State Independent Electoral Commission (BYSIEC), Mr Simon Akpen, in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital.
The state commissioner of Police, Valentine Ntomchukwu, confirmed Akpen’s assassination on Saturday, October 11, 2014.
Ntomchukwu suspected Akpen’s murder to be a case of assassination being that the murderers left his house and properties untouched after killing him.
“In my opinion, it may be a case of assassination because they didn’t take anything away after killing him”, said Ntomchuwku, who added that he already visited the scene of the crime on Friday evening immediately the police received signal about the killing, according to Sahara reporters.
It was learnt that the attackers shot Akpen was shot in the head by the attackers while he came out of his car near his house which is off Otiotio Road.
According to sources , the victim who hailed from Ofoni in Sagbama Local Government Area died at the spot in the pool of his own blood while the murderers absconded having accomplished their mission.
Reports revealed that the assailants have laid in wait for the victim and eventually sniffed the life out of him on his way back from an outing.
