JOS, Nigeria – Seven students of the University of Jos have been kidnapped by unidentified gunmen.
This incident has shaken the University of Jos campus community in Jos, the capital of Plateau State.
Alfred Alabo, Public Relations Officer of the Plateau State Police Command, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, on Wednesday, June 14, 2023.
The abduction occurred on Monday, June 12, 2023, from a hostel outside the campus where the students resided.
The victims were studying for their second-semester examinations, which began on Tuesday, when they were forcefully taken away.
“It is true that some criminal elements abducted seven students of the University of Jos. They were picked up on Monday at about 8:30 pm at their hostel, along Bauchi Ring Road in Jos North Local Government Area,” Alabo informed.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Bartholomew Onyeka, has swiftly responded to the incident by deploying armed police personnel to apprehend the kidnappers and ensure the safe return of the abducted students.
Other security agencies, including Operation Safe Haven, OPSH, have also deployed their personnel for search-and-rescue operations.
Alabo urged the students and residents of the area to remain calm, reassuring them that the security agencies are working diligently towards ensuring the safe return of the hostages.
The case highlights the growing concern of safety in educational institutions across the country.
