MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, expressed deep concern about the recent escalation of Boko Haram attacks in the state.
He lamented the daily killings, dislodgement of military formations, and abductions by the terrorists, indicating that these ongoing assaults suggest that Borno is losing ground in the fight against the insurgents.
Despite the relative peace in the state over the last three years, Zulum emphasized that the situation is deteriorating, with terrorists overruning military bases in Wajirko, Sabon Gari, Wulgo, Izge, and other areas.
He commended the federal government, under President Bola Tinubu, and the security agencies for their continued support in the battle against Boko Haram.
However, he called for enhanced efforts, especially through the equipping of the military with technological warfare, to address the escalating attacks.
Zulum also highlighted the challenges faced due to Borno’s geographical location, bordering Chad, Niger, and Cameroon, which complicates the security situation.
The Shehu of Borno, representing the traditional rulers, echoed similar concerns, emphasizing that areas such as Guzamala, Marte, and Abadam are still fully controlled by Boko Haram.
Many of these areas remain without civil authority, worsening the overall security and governance situation.
Additionally, the traditional leaders have urged the federal government to address the dilapidated roads, such as the Biu-Damboa-Maiduguri and Maiduguri- Dikwa- Ngala routes, to improve access and logistics for security and relief efforts.
The Special Expanded Security Meeting (ESM), attended by key security figures, underscored the urgency of a coordinated and stronger response to Boko Haram’s activities.
