ABUJA, Nigeria – Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has firmly stated that he will not be distracted by calls for him to run for the presidency in the 2027 elections.

Speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, the governor emphasized his commitment to fulfilling his mandate of improving infrastructure and governance in Oyo State, adding that he remains focused on delivering meaningful results for the people.

“I will not allow anyone to set an agenda for me,” Makinde asserted.

“As of now, I remain committed to delivering the policies and programmes that will make lives more meaningful for the people of Oyo State, which is the mandate given to me.”

Makinde, who was elected on the platform of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), acknowledged his potential to occupy higher political office but reiterated that any decision regarding his future would be based on the needs of the Nigerian people, the desires of his political party, and the broader interest of the country.

“If my political journey ends with being governor of Oyo State, I will cherish the opportunity given to me by the people,” he said, underlining that his focus remains on fulfilling his current duties and responsibilities.

The governor also touched on his administration’s achievements, particularly in the areas of infrastructure and security, which he said are the key enablers for the growth of the state’s agribusiness sector.

He cited his recent trip to France, where he finalized a deal for the establishment of a Food Wholesale Market in Ijaiye by Rungis International, as a testament to the state’s commitment to economic expansion through agribusiness.

Makinde also praised his administration’s efforts in addressing rural-urban migration, asserting that infrastructure investments have helped bridge the gap between urban and rural areas, thereby encouraging agricultural development and improving the lives of local farmers.

Regarding the PDP’s internal dynamics, Makinde commented on the recent meeting of the PDP Governors’ Forum (PDPGF) in Ibadan, saying that decisions taken were made with thorough consultation with party organs.

He expressed concern over the hasty calls for the PDP to join a coalition with other opposition parties for the 2027 elections, questioning the motivations behind the moves and whether they truly aligned with the best interests of Nigerians.

On the matter of his succession as governor in 2027, Makinde assured that he had groomed capable individuals within his administration to continue his work, but emphasized that the final decision rests with the people of Oyo State.

He also mentioned that a comprehensive roadmap for continued development would be handed over to his successor, ensuring a smooth transition of leadership.
