AKURE, Nigeria – Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, is incapacitated and currently receiving treatment overseas, a situation that injects uncertainty into the upcoming 2024 governorship race, according to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Senator Abdullahi Adamu.
During a meeting on Monday, July 10, 2023, with APC state chairmen, Adamu shed light on Akeredolu’s health status.
“We regret to announce the extreme incapacity of the Governor of Ondo state who we understand has been hospitalised overseas. We wish and pray for him for a speedy recovery,” he stated.
Governor Akeredolu, who also chairs the South West Governor’s Forum, has been plagued with health issues recently, leading him to hand over power to his deputy, Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, last month.
While Akeredolu had originally planned to resume duties this week, he instead extended his medical leave indefinitely, leaving the state in the hands of his deputy.
The exact nature of Governor Akeredolu’s ailment has not been disclosed.
However, his prolonged absence from office has begun to shift the political landscape in Ondo state and has started influencing discussion around the 2024 governorship race.
In addition to discussing Akeredolu’s health, Senator Adamu also spoke about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ongoing consultation process to assemble his ministerial team.
“The president has just started. And he is doing his extensive consultation before coming up with his nominees for ministers,” Adamu revealed.
He further explained that only after the nominees have undergone screening and have been formally appointed by President Tinubu, will the country be introduced to the new ministers and their respective ministries.
As President Tinubu continues to build his team and Governor Akeredolu battles illness, the political landscape of Nigeria, particularly in Ondo State, continues to shift ahead of the 2024 elections.
