SEOUL, South Korea – Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has been awarded the 2025 Founders’ Sunhak Peace Prize in recognition of his efforts in fostering democratic development and promoting peaceful transitions of power.
The prestigious award ceremony took place on Friday, April 11, 2025, in Seoul, South Korea.
The Sunhak Peace Prize, which honours individuals and organizations that contribute significantly to global peace and human development, was initiated by the Sunhak Peace Prize Foundation.
The award continues the legacy of the late Sun Myung Moon, the founder of the Unification Church.
Jonathan, who made history as the first African to receive the Founders’ Award, was nominated for his role in advocating for democracy and ensuring peaceful political transitions in Nigeria and Africa.
His leadership in Nigeria is particularly remembered for the peaceful handover of power after his 2015 electoral defeat, a move that was hailed as a critical moment for democracy in Africa.
In a heartfelt message posted on Facebook, Jonathan dedicated the award to all Nigerians who believe in the potential for peace, as well as to Africans who are working tirelessly for the continent’s progress.
“This honour belongs to every Nigerian who believes in the possibility of peace and to every African working selflessly for the progress and advancement of our continent,” Jonathan wrote.
Jonathan also expressed his gratitude to the Sunhak Peace Prize Foundation and Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, co-founder of the Universal Peace Federation, for their unwavering support.
He also extended his thanks to his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan, for her continued love and encouragement.
Other notable recipients of the 2025 Sunhak Peace Prize include Wanjira Mathai, Hugh Evans, Patrick Awuah, and Samuel Radebe, all of whom have made significant contributions to global peace and human development.
