People who have flat feet typically need arch supports because they tend to overpronate when walking or running.

A natural movement of the body, pronation refers to the way the foot rolls inward to absorb shock when it strikes the ground. Overpronation is when the foot rolls inward excessively. Because shock isn’t absorbed effectively, overpronators are more likely to get injured.
