NAN – The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), arrested 8,004 offenders nationwide during the just concluded Eid-El-Kabir Patrol organised by the commission.
Mr Bisi Kazeem, Corps Commander and Head, Media Relations and Strategy, FRSC, made the disclosure on Wednesday in Abuja in an interview with newsmen.
He said that the “robust patrol’’ during the period yielded positive results with the arrest of several offenders.
“We recorded 44 deaths during the Sallah patrol and we are determined to further reduce it in subsequent operations.
“Currently, we have reduced the record from the 57 deaths recorded during same period in 2014.
“We arrested 8,004 offenders for violating 9,045 offences during the Sallah period which ran between September 21 to 28.
“671 offenders were arraigned at various mobile courts across the country while 619 were convicted while one person was imprisoned in Kuje Prison, ” Kazeem said.
The commander said that 51 motorists arrested during the period were discharged and acquitted by the courts, while 4,518 vehicles were impounded.
According to him, the offences committed by the motorists range from dangerous overtaking; use of mobile phone while driving; unlatched containers and other traffic violations.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, Corps Marshal of the Commission deployed over 15,000 officials to ensure safety and sanity on the roads during the Sallah.
